Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve

Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve Located in Saptari and Sunsari districts in eastern Nepal, the Koshi Tappu Safari covers the vast expanse Koshi River with its blue waters and lush jungle areas on both sides. The rectangular shaped Reserve is contained within the east and west embankments of the Koshi Barrage.

The Koshi River also supports sparse populations of endangered species such as the Gangetic dolphin and Gharial. At 75m elevation, the reserve as recorded around 439 species of bird variety some of which fly on the way from Siberia during winter. In this package you can have a best bird viewing including Swamp Francolin, Black-necked Stork, Lesser Adjutant, Comb Duck, Falcated Duck, Spot-billed Duck, Cotton Pigmy Goose, Baer's Pochard, Bailon's Crake, Ruddy Crake, Greater Painted Snipe, Pheasant-tailed jacana, Yellow-wattled Lapwing, Indian Courser, Black-bellied Tern, Imperial Eagle, White-tailed Eagle, Lesser Kestrel, Bristle Grass bird, Striated Grass bird, besides bird watching you can do a soft river rafting, nature walk and village visit.

In addition, there are larger ungulates such as Gaur, Nilgai, hog deer and wild pig, and medium sized predators such as fishing cat, jungle cat, and civets. Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve offers many options and activities to give full opportunities to view the wildlife at its best.

What to bring

Binoculars add greatly to your enjoyment for bird and wildlife viewing. Neutral colored clothing is recommended for a visit to the jungle. Light clothing is needed for day time with a sweater and warm jacket for the evenings from November to March. Pants / Trousers are recommended for elephant safari. Comfortable walking shoes, sun hat, sunglasses etc. are essential.

Insect repellent and personal medical requirements should be carried. We suggest guests travel light bringing only one small suitcase or duffle bag. During the warmer months swimming suits are recommended.Small flash light is recommended.

Best Time:

The best time to visit this fabulous wildlife reserve is between October to March when much of the migratory and local birds can be sighted at the barrage and many of the river channels. Numerous Himalayan peaks including the Makalu I (8,463m) the fifth highest mountain in the world can be seen during the clear cooler time of the year.

How to get there

By Air:

It is a 45 minutes flight from Kathmandu to Biratnagar. Enjoying the most panoramic view of Eastern Himalayas including Mt. Everest from Biratnagar 1:45 hour’s drive will reach us to our Deluxe Wildlife Camp.

By Road:

The park is also accessible by road which is 500 km. (about 10 hrs drive) from Kathmandu to Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

By Raft:

For white water enthusiasts the 9 to 10 days exciting trip down the Sun Koshi River can end at the very comfortable camp to recover for your river adventure, enjoying the natural beauty of Koshi Tappu Wildlife Reserve.

Trip day to day itinerary

2 nights/3days

Day 1

Arrive Biratnagar airport. Meet and drive to Koshi Tappu Wildlife camp.

1:00 pm: Lunch

3:00 pm: Birding in the nearby surroundings of the park.

7:00 pm: Dinner.

Day 2

5:30 am: Wake up call.

6:00 am: Morning nature walks within near vicinity.

8:00 am: Breakfast.

9:00 am: Soft Wildlife rafting on the Sapta Koshi River with naturalists to help you view some of the water birds, water buffaloes, dolphins and various marine and jungle wildlife. End boat trip by the bank of the river and have picnic lunch. Short drive to the Koshi Barrage to view the bird life and fresh water Dolphins. Late afternoon return to the camp.

7:00 pm: Dinner.

Day 3

5:30 am: Wake up call.

6:00 am: Bird watching in to the jungle nearby.

8:00 am: Breakfast.

9:00 am: Departure to Biratnagar Airport.

Day 1

9:00 am: Birding all along the dam of the Koshi River and the area of Pink tower crossing the Koshi barrage. Enjoy packed lunch at the pink tower. We return to camp lately for bird watching.

Day 4

5:30 am: Wake up call.

6:00 am: More bird watching in to the jungle nearby.

8:00 am: Breakfast.

9:00 am: Departure to Biratnagar airport.
