Mera Peak (6654m) is the highest permitted trekking peak in Nepal, rises to the south of Everest and dominates the cut- between the wild and heavily wooded valleys. Mera Peak is officially the highest among all 18 permitted trekking peaks. Climbing Mera Peak is moderately challenging, and for many first-time Nepal climbers while it offers a thrilling opportunity to try some Himalayan rock and ice. The climb is not too technical except you will need good adaptation to altitude and some basic experience with climbing equipment; including ice axe and crampons. Mera peak was an almost overlooked mountain to the east of the main Khumbu trekking trails. We follow the original Everest expedition route at the trailhead from Lukla, cross spectacular gorges and visit the Peak before entering Sherpa regions of Solu Khumbu, the wilderness of Hinku Valley. We will walk along a high, rocky ridge through dense forests and across several streams before reaching the pass that will take us into the remote and largely uninhabited Hinku Valley. Trekking and Camping in this wild land of Himalayan pine forests is indeed an impressive experience. The base camp can be set up at 5300m on the side in the moraine below the ice. Normally, high camp is set at 5800m near a rocky outcrop on the Mera Glacier. Our ascent will follow the glacier that leads to Mera la (5415m) and on to high camp where we will prepare for our early morning summit. The high camp proves to be one to the spectacular viewpoints in Nepal offering the panoramic views of Kanchenjunga, Chamlang, Makalu and Baruntse sweeping around from the east and Amadablam, Cho Oyu and Kangtega to the west. The giant faces of Everest, Lhotse and Nuptse appear in the north. This view is undoubtedly one of the most stunning and fascinating trek in all of Nepal.
